Britt Leads Huskies to Win

LOCK HAVEN -- Ruben Britt (Voorheese, NJ/Eastern Regional) scored 19 points to lead the Bloomsburg University men's basketball team to a 71-63 win over Lock Haven on Saturday.

Britt helped the Huskies jump out to an early 18-10 lead by scoring nine points in the first nine minutes of the game. Lock Haven rallied and pulled to within a point, 31-30, at the half.

The Bald Eagles started fast in the second half and used a 16-6 run to take a nine-point lead, 46-37, with 13:21 left in the game. The Huskies, though, regrouped and went on a 11-4 four run to get back within a bucket at 50-48 with 8:36 to play following a jumper from Michael Varanavage (Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan). The sophomore, coming over from the football team, was playing in his first game for the Huskies.

Later, Bloomsburg took its first lead of the game since halftime when Jesse Betar (Altoona/Altoona) hit a three-pointer with 5:31 to play putting the Huskies in front 55-54. Ronnie Benson (Harleysville/Souderton) then followed with a three-pointer for the Huskies and Britt hit a jumper giving the Huskies a 60-54 lead with four minutes to go in the game. In the final minute the Huskies hit seven of eight free throws to seal the win.

Along with Britt's 19 points, Dan Hoover (Lansdale/North Penn) scored 16 points and had 13 rebounds, while Varanavage scored 11 points and Betar 10 for Bloomsburg. Lock Haven, 3-7, got 25 points from Billy Arre in a losing cause.

Bloomsburg, now 3-7, will play at Edinboro on Sunday at 3 p.m.
