Men's Basketball Has Four-Game Winning Streak Snapped
BLOOMSBURG--The Bloomsburg University men's basketball team had its four-game winning streak snapped on Saturday after falling to Pitt-Johnstown, 84-67, at the Nelson Field House.
In the first half the Huskies held an early 7-6 lead with 13:18 to play after Ed Hall converted four free throws in a 30-second span. The Mountain Cats then put together a 25-8 run to open a 31-15 lead with 4:09 to go before the break. Rudy Roberts had nine points and Jordan Miller six for UPJ in the rally.
The Huskies responded though with a 13-4 run to close out the half and trim the deficit to just seven, 35-28, at the break. Ruben Britt (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Regional) keyed the run with five points and Ed Hall (Spencerville, MD/Paint Branch) adding a three-point play for Bloomsburg.
Early in the second half with UPJ leading by 11 points, 49-38, Bloomsburg used a 12-4 spurt over a three- minute stretch to cut the lead to three, 53-50. Jamar Smack (State College/State College) and Jesse Betar (Altoona/Altoona) connected on three-pointers with Britt adding a dunk as the Huskies got within a three-point bucket with just under 13 minutes to play.
UPJ, though, answered with 13-2 run over the next four minutes to push the lead back to 15 points. The Huskies could get no closer than 13 points the rest of the way and saw their four-game winning streak snapped.
Patrick Grubbs led the Mountain Cats, now 5-3, with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Nick Novak and Danny Branch also scored 15 each. Andy Byer chipped in with 14 and Roberts finished with 10.
Bloomsburg was led in scoring by Hall with 17 points and six rebounds, while Larry Webster (Elkton, MD/Elkton) and Britt each added 11 rebounds.
The Huskies, 4-3, are idle till Dec. 29 when they play at Goldey-Beacom.
