BLOOMSBURG-- Bloomsburg University men's soccer player Tyler Phillips (Ephrata/Ephrata) has been named the 2009 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Freshman of the Year, while head coach Paul Payne was named the PSAC Eastern Division Coach of the Year.

In addition, three other players, Mike Jones (Paoli/Great Valley), David Leiendecker (Easton/Easton), and junior Tim Pfender (Langhorne/Neshaminy) were also named All-PSAC East.

Phillips, a forward, led the Huskies in scoring with 11 goals and an assist in 17 games this season to earn both first team honors and the Freshman of the Year award. He scored a career-high five points against Goldey-Beacom College earlier this year and netted a team-high three game-winning goals over the course of the season. Phillips was also named the PSAC East Player of the Week twice this season.

Jones has been named to the All-PSAC East team for the third time in his career after anchoring a Huskies defense that allowed just 1.17 goals per game this season. For his career, he scored six goals from his midfield position.

Pfender, a back, earned his first All-Conference honor this season. The junior was an integral part of a defense that limited opponents to just 15 shots per game. Pfender also contributed on the offensive end this season, assisting on a goal in a win over Shippensburg.

Leiendecker, a goalie, has been named to his second straight All-PSAC East team after making 112 saves in goal for the Huskies this season. He posted a goals-against average of 1.16 in 1,632 minutes of play and allowed just 21 goals on the year. Leiendecker had a save percentage of .842 and recorded two shutouts for the Huskies.

The PSAC East Coach of the Year award for Payne is his first in 11 years as the Bloomsburg head coach. Payne is the school's all-time leader in career victories for men's soccer. He led the team to a record of 10-6-2 this season and a berth in the PSAC playoffs for the fourth time in his tenure at Bloomsburg.

"Obviously it's an honor to have your peers recognize your work , but it was really the work of the players that is being recognized," said Payne. "This group of players has been an absolute joy to coach and work with. I know it's a cliche, but this award is really a team award."

Payne is also thrilled about Phillips being named the Eastern Division Freshman of the Year.

"To have Tyler recognized at the freshman of the year in the east is quite an accomplishment," Payne added. "There were some outstanding new players in our conference and to see him earn this honor is special. He brings great intensity to the field whether he's defending or attacking and has provided Bloomsburg with that much needed scoring touch that we have been missing. I'm sure he will tell you that his teammates are a big reason for this award."
