2000-01 Bloomsburg University Men's Swimming Preview

Optimism is high this season for Bloomsburg men's swimming coach Roch King. "This is probably the most positive outlook we've had in the last six or seven years," King said. After a 4-6 dual meet season and a seventh-place finish at the PSAC Championships in 1999-2000, the Huskies seem ready to show marked improvement.

"The team seems to be coming together as a group very well," said King. A good balance between veteran and rookie swimmers will help Bloomsburg reach success. "Without a doubt, this is probably the best recruiting class in the last couple years," said King. "And there is some good leadership coming from the other guys." Optimism can be contagious. "The team has a sense of its potential this year," said King, "and I think they have been buoyed by that." One of the Huskies' strengths this season will be the ability to be competitive in almost every race. "The butterfly is a question mark," said King. "But otherwise there is not a place where a team knows it can take advantage of us. We should be able to line up and compete against just about everybody we face this year." If the butterfly is a weakness, then the backstroke, breaststroke, and the individual medley races should show to be Bloomsburg's strengths. David Robinson is one of the Huskies' top returners. The junior finished second in the 500 free at the PSAC meet last season. He was the conference champion in the 1,650 free as a freshman.

Senior Chris Crater returns to help the Huskies in the breaststroke events. Classmate Andrew Rider is one of Bloomsburg's best sprint freestylers. Jay Forman and Brent Watkins are juniors that had top times for the Huskies in 1999-2000. Forman should find success in backstroke events; Watkins had team-leading times in breaststroke races. Key players in the new crop of swimmers should contribute right away. Jason Davis will swim the 100 breast and 200 individual medley and figures to score points for the Huskies right away. Steve Fisher is another first-year competitor who should be productive in sprint freestyle and freestyle relay events. Ryan Farrell, Brandon Hilt, Chad Matthews, Robert Panowicz, Fred Urbach, and Andrew Wise round out Coach King's class of freshmen.
