Huskies Split Meet Against Shippensburg

BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University men's and women's swim teams hosted Shippensburg on Friday with the women defeating the Lady Raiders, 110-93 and the men falling, 114-91. The women improve to 4-0 on the year, while the men fall to 1-2.

Freshmen Ashley Yelinek (Youngwood/Southermoreland) took the first individual event for the Huskies, winning the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:55.58. Yelinek also won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:23.71, seven seconds ahead of any other competitor.

In the 50-yard freestyle, Holly McCullough (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) and Lindsay Wallace (Frenchville/Clearfield) were first and second with times of 26.48 and 26.68, respectively. Wallace was also second in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 56.61.

Erin Carey (West Chester/Henderson) won the 400 IM for the Huskies finishing with a time of 4:51.67, and was second in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:36.17, while freshmen Lauren Sterkenberg (Lancaster /Hempfield) was first in the 200-yard butterfly, finishing with a 2:18.07.

The men were led by Travis Backenstoe (Walnutport/Northampton) who took first in the 100-yard freestyle and the 50-yard freestyle with times of 49.31 and 22.38, respectively. In the 500-yard freestyle, Andrew Wise (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) placed first with a time of 5:01.09 and was third in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:53.60.

In the 400 IM Tom DiSalvatore (Thornton/West Chester East) took first place with a time of 4:31.63 and was fourth in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:11.01.

Senior Brandon Hilt (Mt. Joy/Hempfield) also turned in a first-place performance at 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:02.90. Hilt, DiSalvatore, Backenstoe and Jason Davis (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) teamed up to win the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:39.49.

The women will host East Stroudsburg, tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. The men will have off until Saturday, Jan. 24 when both teams host Indiana (PA) at 1:00 p.m. in a PSAC match up.
