Bloomsburg Men’s and Women’s Swim Teams Beat Albright

BLOOMSBURG — The Bloomsburg University Men’s and Women’s Swim Team beat Albright in dual meet action. The women’s team beat 114.5 – 87.5, while the men were 131-73 winners Friday night.

For the women, Dianna Smith (West Grove/ Avon Grove) and Ashley Yelinek (Youngwood/ Southmoreland) had two first place finishes for the Huskies. Smith finished first in the 200 free in 1:57.58, while teammate Sara Hippeli finished third in 2:02.24. Smith also placed first in the 100 free in 54.24 and Courtney Dean (Lancaster/ Hempfield) took third in 56.19. Yelinek finished first in the 1000 free in 10:50.52 while Barb Caccia (Lauren Springs, NJ /Sterling High) finished second for the Huskies in a time of 11:13.53.

In the 500 free the Huskies took all three of the top spots as Yelinek took first in a time of 5:19.45, Hippeli took second in 5:27.47 and Caccia placed third in 5:29.61. Allie Reed (Selinsgrove/ Selinsgrove Area), and Dean went one and two in the 50 free. Reed finished in 25.68 and Dean finished in 25.82. In the 200 IM, Erin Carey (West Chester / Henderson) placed second in 2:15.11 and Sara Lengler (Harrisburg/ Central Dauphin East) finished third in 2:16.73.

In the 200 fly Kari Pokrzywa(Fairless Hills/ Pennsbury) finished second for the Huskies in a time of 2:17.77 and Stephanie Boccuti took third in 2:18.43. In the 200 back the Huskies yet again occupied the top three spots, Pokrzywa took first in a time of 2:12.68, Laura Jeffers(Collegeville /Perkiomen Valley) placed second in 2:14.28 and Ashley Koch (Collegeville/ West Chester East) took third in 2:20.71.

In relay action the team of Pokrzywa, Carey, Lengler, and Reed placed second in the 400 Medley Relay in 3:47.78. While the team of Koch, Jeffers, Sterkenberg, and Kristen Ohlsen (Allentown/ Parkland) placed third in 4:17.99. In the 400 Free relay, Jessica Gribbin (Richboro/ Council Rock North), Kristina Slabonik (Boyertown/Boyertown), Boccuti and Kristin Harrison (Chalfont/Central Bucks West) took second in 4:04.31.

Chris Rumfelt(Shamokin/ Shamokin), Travis Backenstoe(Walnutport/ Northampton) , Josh Chandler, Steve Post(Scranton/Scranton) all had two first place finishes to lead the Huskies to a win, Rumfelt placed first in the 1000 free in a time of 10:23.32, while teammates Jim Toolan (Norristown/ La Salle) placed second in 10:41.02 and Ken Smith(Philadelphia/ Archbishop Ryan) placed third in 10:41.42.

In the 200 Free, Post picked up his first of two first place honors. Post finished in 1:48.51. Steve Withers (Chalfont) finished second in 1:52.63. In the 500 free the Huskies took the top three spots as Post picked up another first place finish in 5:04.59, Toolan finished second in 5:11.92 and Smith third in 5:16.92.

In the 50 free, Travis Backenstoe(Walnutport/ Northampton) finished first in 21.69 and Bret Palmer(Marysville/ Susquenita) placed second 22.69. In the 200 IM, Chandler placed first in 2:03.73 and Jason Chrisanthon(Springfield/Springfield) finished third for the Huskies in 2:07.81. Chrisanthon also placed first in the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:19.26. In the 200 fly Rumfelt placed took first again in 2:04.07.

In the 100 free, Backenstoe placed first in 48.04. In the 200 Backstroke, Chandler finshed first in 2:04.72 and Mark Freeman (Bethlehem/ Perkiomen Valley) finished third in 2:06.35.

In relay action the team of Chandlers, Chrisanthon, Williams, Freeman placed second in the 400 medley relay in 3:47.78. In the 400 free relay, Rumfelt, Withers, Post, and Backenstoe placed first in 3:16.47.

The Men and Women’s team will compete against The College of New Jersey on Saturday at 1 p.m.
