Dianna Smith Wins 200-Free Championship at PSACs

MEET RESULTS

CLARION --Bloomsburg University men's swimmer Chris Rumfelt (Shamokin/Shamokin) took second place in the 200-free to lead the Huskies on day three of the 2006 PSAC swimming championships.

In addition, women's swimmer Dianna Smith (West Grove/Avon Grove) captured the 200-free championship on Friday at Clarion.

Smith becomes Bloomsburg's first PSAC champion this year winning the event in a time of 1:55.27, a half second better than the second place finisher from Kutztown. Freshman Allie Reed finished eighth in the event in a time of 1:57.71.

In other highlights of the day, Sara Lengler (Harrisburg/C.D. East) took sixth in the 100-backstroke in a time of 1:00.93, while Erin Carey (West Chester/Henderson) was seventh in the 400-IM 4:43.99.

In relay action, the Huskies were third in the 800-free relay in a school-record time of 7:54.43 with the team of Smith, Courtney Dean (Lancaster/Hempfield), Allie Reed (Selinsgrove/Selinsgrove) and Ashley Yelinek (Youngwood/Southmoreland).

For the men, Chris Rumfelt (Shamokin/Shamokin) took second in the 200-free in a time of 1:42.81 to lead the way for the Huskies. Rumfelt qualified for the finals by taking first in the morning prelims in a time of 1:42.09, just 0.19 seconds off the school record.

The other top individual finish for the Huskies came in the 400-IM where Josh Chandler (Mount Joy/Donegal) was eighth in 4:23.81.

In relay action, the Huskies were second in the 800-free relay in a school-record time of 7:03.26 with the team of Rumfelt, Steve Withers (Doylestown/Central Bucks), Steve Post (Scranton/Scranton) and Travis Backenstoe (Walnutport/Northampton). The Huskies shattered the old team mark, set in 2001, by more than two seconds.

In addition, the 200-medley relay team of Mark Freeman (Bethlehem/Perkiomen Valley), Nicholas Prima (Trinidad), Bret Palmer (Marysville/Susquenita) and Backenstoe were fifth in a time of 1:38.55.

Through three days of competition, the women's team is fourth with 320 points, while the men are fifth with 147 points. The championships will wrap up on Saturday with the prelims starting at 10 a.m. and the finals at 6 p.m.
