Castaneda Qualifies for NCAA Championships
BLOOMSBURG-- Bloomsburg University swimmer Juan Castaneda (Shamokin/Shamokin) has qualified for the 2009 NCAA Division II national swimming championships after turning in a qualifying time at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championships last weekend.
Castaneda, a sophomore, swam in a 100-fly time trial on the final day of the championships and turned in a time of 50.21 seconds to earn a spot in next month's championship event in Houston, TX. Castaneda's time broke his school-record time of 50.99 set back in December.
Castaneda is the first Bloomsburg men's swimmer to make the NCAA championships since 2005-06 when Chris Rumfelt and Travis Backenstoe made the field and just the third swimmer since the 1992-93 season to achieve a trip to the national championships.
