More Swim Records Fall for BU at the PSAC Championships

MECHANICSBURG-After breaking the 200 IM school record in the morning prelims, sophomore Jeremy Frey (Pipersville/Central Bucks East) broke it again in the finals as the Bloomsburg University men's and women's swim teams competed on day two of the 2010 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships on Friday.

Bettering the mark by nearly four seconds at 1:54.86 in the morning, Frey came back in the evening and swam a 1:54.19, good enough for second overall. After opening the championships with a record-setting performance in the 1000 free on Thursday night, junior John King (Ridley/Ridley Park) followed it up with an eighth place finish in the 500 free on Friday night. He finished with a time of 4:46.36 after swimming a career-best 4:42.16 in the morning prelims. Both swimmers achieved NCAA "B" qualifying times in their events.

After finishing 14th in the prelims of the 500 free, senior Joe Bentz (York/York Suburban) came in 13th in the finals with a time of 4:48.37. Senior Dave Mancinelli (Plymouth Meeting/Westmont Hilltop) also swam for the men, finishing 14th overall in the 50 free with a time of 21.90.

The men's 200 free relay team of Mancinelli, senior Michael Bierds (Malvern/West Chester East), junior Derek Straub (Sinking Spring/Wilson) and junior Ryan Lightner (Lebanon/Cedar Crest) came in sixth overall with a time of 1:26.47 while the 400 medley relay finished fifth with a time of 3:30.75 which set a new school record. That team was made up of Straub, sophomore Tim Dorsch (Schwenksville/Souderton Area), junior Juan Castaneda (Shamokin/Shamokin Area), and Mancinelli.

On the women's side, senior Allie Reed (Selinsgrove/Selinsgrove) turned in a personal best in the 50 free during the prelims with a 24.34, and then bettered the mark in the evening, finishing seventh overall with a time of 24.33. The time was an NCAA "B" qualifying time. In the 200 IM, freshman Madeline Barlow (Yardley/Pennsbury) finished with a time of 2:12.83 in the finals, coming in 12th overall. Freshman Bridget Hilferty (Royersford/Perkiomen Valley) came in 14th in the 500 free, finishing with a time of 5:14.99.

The women's 200 free relay team of sophomore Sarah Grawe (Stafford, VA/North Stafford), freshman Jacquie Glaser (Easton/Easton), junior Nicole Chinnici (Vineland, NJ/Vineland) and Reed finished seventh overall with a time of 1:38.58 while the 400 medley relay came in ninth overall with a time of 3:58.27 which set a new school record. That team was made up of Grawe, sophomore Brittany McNeil (Oxford/Oxford Area), Barlow and Reed.

The championships continue on Saturday as preliminary heats begin at 10:00 a.m.
