Barlow, Frey Break School Records at Zippy Invitational

AKRON, OH-Freshman Madeline Barlow (Yardley/Pennsbury) of the women's team and sophomore Jeremy Frey (Pipersville/Central Bucks East) of the men's team broke school records as the Bloomsburg University swim teams competed at the Zippy Invitational on Friday. This was day one of a three-day invitational at the Ocasek Natatorium.

Barlow, competing in the finals of the 200 IM, swam a time of 2:07.19, breaking a 24-year old record held by Gwen Cressman who swam a time of 2:08.56 back in 1985. Barlow was the top overall finisher in the event and her preliminary time of 2:09.41 helped put her in the final.

Frey, also competing in the 200 IM, set his school record in the preliminaries, finishing with a time of 1:58.29, narrowly breaking the old record held by Jason Davis, who in 2001 swam a time of 1:58.50. Frey would later go on to swim a time of 1:58.52 in the finals, 12th overall.

The top school finishers in the other events swam today were freshman Bridget Hilferty (Royersford/Perkiomen Valley) with a time of 5:17.53 in the 500 free and sophomore Sarah Grawe (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) with a time of 24.93 in the 50 free. The women's 400 medley relay team finished 10th with a time of 3:59.72 while the 200 medley relay team finished 13th overall with a time of 1:40.11.

On the men's side, junior John King (Ridley Park/Ridley) finished with a time of 4:57.71 in the 500 free and senior David Mancinelli (Plymouth Meeting/Westmont Hilltop) swam a time of 21.78 in the prelims of the 50 free before finishing with a time of 21.99 in the finals, good for 22nd overall. The men's 400 medley relay came in ninth place overall with a time of 3:32.67 and the 200 medley relay team finished 10th with a time of 1:26.57.

The prelims and finals of 16 events will continue tomorrow before wrapping up on Sunday.
