1999-2000 Bloomsburg University Men's Swimming Preview

With the return of eight swimmers from last year's lineup and the return of two lost to injury, the Bloomsburg University men's swimming team should show improvement over last season's 1-8-1 record and eighth-place finish at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships.

Head coach Roch King is expecting a more competitive Huskies squad. "I think we are a lot better than we were at the conference meet last year," said King.

Having sophomore Jay Forman and junior Andrew Rider healthy helps make Bloomsburg better. Forman, the school record holder in the 100 backstroke, missed all of last season with a shoulder injury, and Rider was out more than half of the season as well. Rider was the team's top sprint freestyle competitor before having his season cut short.

Among the top returnees from last season's team are sophomores David Robinson and Brent Watkins. Robinson was last year's conference champion in the 1,650 freestyle. Watkins had the team's best time in the 200 breaststroke and swam on the 800 freestyle relay team that placed seventh at the PSAC Championships.

Senior Michael Ives scored points in four different events at last year's conference championships. "This is going to be a big year for him," said King.

Seniors Brian Manofsky and Michael Moffitt swam on some of the Huskies' top relay teams last season.

A freshman class of seven will add depth to the Bloomsburg roster.

Junior college transfer Taren Igou should contribute right away in the individual medley events. He has posted times in the 200 that are near the school record.

Sophomore Robert Struble will compete for the first time at the collegiate level and may make a strong contribution.

With a deeper roster, the Huskies will have more options for their lineup. "We're going to have enough versatility to move people around and make adjustments on a meet-to-meet basis," said King.

Bloomsburg will swim four home meets, including the Bloomsburg Relays on Nov. 7. The PSAC Championships are at West Chester on Feb. 17 through Feb. 19.
