Bloomsburg Tennis Players Earn All-PSAC Honors

BLOOMSBURG—Eight Bloomsburg University men's and women's tennis players were honored by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference for their outstanding play this season by being named All-PSAC.

Earning first team honors for the women were Erin Bartsch (Warren/Warren) and Beth Fulton (Nesquehoning/Tamaqua), while Jenn Esposito (Lock Haven/Lock Haven) and Katie Kochera (Bethel/Tulpehocken) earned second team All-PSAC honors.

For the men, Alex Kalezic (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) and Kris Shumway (Towanda/Troy) earned first team All-PSAC honors, while Jay Nistad (Menford/Medford, NJ) and Floris Vogel (Leiden, Netherlands) were named second team All-PSAC. Kalezic was also named the PSAC Men's Rookie of the Year.

Bartsch posted a record of 15-5 this season playing mainly at number one singles. The Huskies team MVP for the year also put together a record of 16-8 at number one doubles with several partners. She had her most success playing with Esposito as the pair combined for a 10-5 mark.

As a freshman, Bartsch won the PSAC Flight Three singles title and the Flight One Doubles crown.

Fulton, a transfer from Virginia Tech, was 16-7 for the year playing mainly at number two singles for the Huskies. In doubles play, Fulton was 17-7 with the majority of her matches at number two. She teamed with Katie Kochera to her best mark of 12-2.

Esposito, a senior, ended her career at Bloomsburg by going 17-8 for the year playing mainly at number four singles. Overall she posted a record of 83-24 for her career, the fifth-highest winning percentage (.775) all-time in Bloomsburg history. In doubles play, she also posted a record of 17-8 for the season and was 75-31 overall for her career.

Kochera, a junior, posted a singles record of 13-8 for the Huskies at number three singles. At the NCAA East Regional championships, Kochera posted victories in both her matches for Bloomsburg. In doubles play, Kochera was 15-8 overall. She teamed with Fulton to post a record of 12-2 at number two doubles.

The Bloomsburg women's team finished with a record of 13-7 for the year.

For the men, Kalezic was named All-PSAC and the Rookie of the Year despite recording a mark of 5-11 for the year playing mainly at number one singles. Facing the top opponent of each team, Kalezic played one of his best matches against Penn State, dropping a tough, three-set match.

In doubles play, Kalezic was 10-9 with most of his matches coming at number one with Shumway.

A sophomore, Shumway was 15-6 for the Huskies this season playing at number two singles. The Huskies team MVP, Shumway was 10-9 in doubles play.

Shumway is a former PSAC Rookie of the Year and, as a freshman, was second in the Flight Three championships and won the Flight Two Doubles title.

Nistad, a senior, was 12-9 for Bloomsburg this season with most of his matches coming at number four singles. In doubles competition, Nisatd was 6-9 playing at number two doubles.

A former PSAC Flight Three singles champion, Nistad led the Huskies in wins, with 25, as both a sophomore and junior.

Vogel, a freshman, led the team in wins with a 20-5 record, mainly at number five singles. In the PSAC championship match against Kutztown, Vogel rallied from a set down to win in three sets. In doubles play, Vogel was 15-8 overall, posting a 15-5 record at number three doubles with Kurt Caster.

The Bloomsburg men's team finished with a record of 9-6 for the year.
