BLOOMSBURG—Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania will host the Division II East Regional Men's Tennis Championship this Friday and Saturday, May 4-5. The event will feature Bloomsburg University, Assumption College, Belmont Abbey College and Kutztown University. The championships will start at noon on Friday, when top-seeded Belmont Abbey will play number four Assumption in the first semifinal match, while second-seeded Bloomsburg and third-seeded Kutztown will square off at 1 p.m. in the second semifinal match. The winners of the semifinals will meet on Saturday at 9 a.m. for the NCAA Division II Eastern Regional Championship. The winner of the Eastern Regional moves on to the NCAA Division II Championship Round to be held May 10-12 in Pensacola, Florida, on the campus of the University of West Florida.
Belmont Abbey enters play with a record of 20-3, coming out of play in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference (CVAC). They are ranked 25th in the nation in Division II tennis and are led by sophomore Sergiu Pletosu, who will play number one singles. The number two singles player is junior Daniel Faria, while senior Richard Buerkle will play number three singles for Belmont Abbey.
Bloomsburg will enter the tournament with a record of 12-6, after the team finished second at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships held on April 21-22. The Huskies are led by freshman Floris Vogel (Leiden, Netherlands) who enters play with a record of 20-4, primarily at number four or five singles.
Vogel will be aided by teammates Kris Shumway (Towanda/Troy), number two singles, and Kurt Caster (Williamsport/Williamsport), number six singles, who have records of 15-6 and 14-8, respectively. Senior Jay Nistad (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) enters the action with a record of 12-8, primarily played at number four or five singles. Freshman Aleksander Kalezic (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) will play number one singles for Bloomsburg. He enters play with a record of 5-10 on the season.
Kutztown enters the championship with a 12-3 record, after winning the PSAC Championships two weeks ago. The Golden Bears upset top-seeded Bloomsburg, 5-2, in the finals of the event to claim the title and snap the Huskies 15-year winning streak in the event. Kutztown is 1-1 on the year versus Bloomsburg, losing 5-4 on April 10.
The Golden Bears are led by top singles player Guillermo Ramos, who enters play with a record of 21-7. Johannes Wingerter (16-7), Gustavo Boratto (13-7) and Fabricio Mazaia (12-5) will all be looked at to help lead the team, while freshmen Velmurugan Annamalai and Alok Bhide will add a spark to the
Kutztown team, as the two have records of 14-2 and 12-2, respectively.
Assumption comes out of the Northeast-10 Conference with an overall record of 19-0, a perfect 11-0 in conference play. The team is led by freshman Alex Madrigal and junior Keegan Holt who enter the competition with perfect records of 18-0 and 15-0, respectively. Sophomores Sean Kenney and David Jervasi enter play with identical records of 17-1. Sophomore Jason Speirs will look to contribute this weekend as he enters play with a record of 16-1.
