Bloomsburg Falls to Assumption in NCAA East Regional Final

BLOOMSBURG- The Bloomsburg University men's tennis team fell to Assumption College, 5-4, in the finals of the NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

After doubles play, the Greyhounds led 2-1. At first doubles, Kris Shumway and Mike McGrath defeated Sean Kenney and Ryan Richert, the second-ranked doubles team in the nation, 8-4, for the Huskies lone point in doubles action.

Assumption got straight set victories at number five and six singles, but number one through four would all go to a third set. At first singles, Shumway defeated Kenney 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. Alex Kalezic got a 7-6 (6), 3-6, 6-4 victory over Richert at second singles. Mark Vellek defeated Alex Madrigal 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 at the number four spot to tie the score at 4-4. Jason Spiers defeated Mike McGrath 5-7, 7-6, 6-4 to give the Greyhounds the victory.

The Huskies finish their season at 13-6. Assumption, 23-5, will advance to the NCAA Division II championship round in Kansas City.
