Bloomsburg Men's Tennis Team Advances to PSAC Championship Match

BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University men's tennis team advanced to the finals of the 2004 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championship with a 5-0 win over Millersville University on Friday at Shippensburg University.

The Huskies will take on Kutztown University, a 5-0 winner over East Stroudsburg, in the title match Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Huskies jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the completion of doubles action. The number one team of Mike McGrath (Media/Penncrest) and Aleks Kalezic (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) easily downed Greg Bennett and Evan McConaghy, 8-2, while at number two Brian Bogus (Conroe, TX/Oak Ridge) and Kurt Caster (Williamsport/Williamsport) beat Brandon Kessler and Scott Smith, 8-3. At number three, Mark Vellek (Sioux Falls, SD/Washington) and Brendan Miller (New Providence/Lampeter-Strasburg) downed Fred Lomabrd and Sean Betesh, 8-2.

The Huskies put the match away in singles action with McGrath winning at number one after his opponent retired after dropping the first set. Then Caster won the match for Bloomsburg with a 6-0, 6-0 whitewash at number four.

Bloomsburg, defending PSAC champs, will face Kutztown for the title on Saturday. Earlier this season the Huskies won a 7-2 decision over the Golden Bears.
