Huskies Shut Out Franklin Pierce and Bryant in Men's Tennis
BLOOMSBURG— The Bloomsburg University men's tennis team shut out both Franklin Pierce College and Bryant College at the Bloomsburg Duals, 9-0. With the wins, the Huskies improve to 11-5 on the season.
In the first match against Franklin Pierce, each Bloomsburg singles player only took two sets to defeat their opponent. At number one singles, Mike McGrath (Media/Penncrest) won in convincing fashion over Darko Minic, 6-3, 6-1. Aleks Kalezic (Belgrade/Yugoslavia) won his first singles match at the duals, beating Arun Lazarus at number two singles, 7-6, 6-2. Brian Bogus (Conroe, TX/Oak Ridge) defeated his opponent 6-2, 6-2 while Mark Vellek (Sioux Falls, SD/Washington) didn't lose a game, winning 6-0, 6-0 over Elliot McLlellan. At number five singles, Kurt Caster (Williamsport/Williamsport) picked up a win 6-0, 6-1 while Mark Farnsworth (Audubon/Mathacton) won his match 6-2, 6-0.
The double's team of Kalezic and McGrath defeated Franklin Pierce's Minic and Lazarus, 8-1. The number two doubles team of Brendan Miller and Vellek won handily, 8-0 over Ryan Jones and McLlellan. At number three, Kevin Wenck and Farnsworth picked up the win, 8-4.
Versus Bryant, the Huskies picked up a win at number one singles with Mike McGrath beating Bryant's Jonathan Peiliker, 6-1, 6-2. Aleks Kalezic cruised at number two, while Brian Bogus pulled out a tight two-setter at number three, 6-3, 7-5. Mark Vellek won his second match of the day by not dropping a game along with teammate Kurt Caster winning in routine fashion at number five. At number six, Brendan Miller (New Providence/Lampeter-Strasburg) pulled out a 6-4, 6-3 victory.
In doubles action, the team of McGrath and Kalezic won, 8-3, a number one, while the team of Bogus and Caster won 8-1 at number two. Mark Farnsworth (Audubon/Methacton) and Miller won 8-1 at number three.
The Huskies will next be in Wednesday at 3 p.m. as they travel to face conference rival Kutztown.
