Huskies Wrap up Spring Break Swing with a Win
BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University men's tennis team defeated Catawba College, 7-2, Friday in Hilton Head, SC.
The Huskies, 6-5, got a stellar performance from its number one pairing of Mike McGrath (Media/Penncrest) and Aleks Kalezic (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) winning 8-4, while the number two team of Brian Bogus (Conroe, TX/Oak Ridge) and Kurt Caster (Montoursville/Williamsport) won, 8-2. The Huskies fell 8-5 at number three.
In singles, McGrath won at number one behind a strong offensive showing claiming the match, 6-0, 6-2. Kalezic was unable to overcome the steady ground game of Catawba's Eric Noll dropping the match 6-1, 6-1, while Bogus cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory at three. Mark Vellek (Sioux Falls, SD/Washington) held on to win his match at number four in a second set tiebreak after having match points at 5-2 in the second set. Vellek won the match 6-3, 7-6 (6). Caster found himself in a second set battle as well before pulling out the 6-3, 7-6 (4) victory. Brendan Miller (New Providence/Lampeter/Strasburg) was untested at number six winning 6-2, 6-1.
The Huskies will next be in action Saturday, March 20 at noon as they host Division I opponent Lehigh.
