Dowling Advances to NCAA East Regional Finals in Men's Tennis
BLOOMSBURG, PA— Dowling College advanced to the finals of the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis East Regionals on the strength of a 5-2 victory over Mercy College at Bloomsburg University Friday afternoon. The Golden Lions advance to play host #3 Bloomsburg University, which defeated #6 Concordia College by a 5-1 margin in today's other match.
Dowling jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play, but not without some high drama. With the #2 and #3 flights splitting, each in convincing fashion, all eyes were on the battle at #1. The Golden Lions' tandem of Peter Veslovsky and Wilem Jansen van Rensberg earned a break in the final game to prevail by a 9-7 margin.
Mercy caught an early break in singles play as #1 Hans Peter Gartner took the victory over Peter Veselovsky after Dowling's top player was unable to continue due to injury after trailing 5-0 in the first set. Very little went against the Golden Lions thereafter, as they secured the next three singles matches to finish, all in straight sets.
