Men's Tennis Team to Face Valdosta State in Round of 16
HOUSTON, TX-- The Bloomsburg University men's tennis team will face Valdosta State (VSU) in a round of 16 match at the NCAA Division II tennis championships in Houston, TX on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. The match is being played as part of the NCAA Division II Spring Sports Festival.
The Huskies, 16-5, advanced to Houston with a 5-3 win over Bryant University last week. This will be the eighth time the Huskies have advanced to the round of 16 in coach Marty Coyne's career. A win over VSU would also be the 200th victory for Coyne as head coach of the men's team. He also has 223 wins as head coach of the BU women's team.
Bloomsburg is led by senior Dan Gal who is 18-3 on the year playing at number one singles, while Ryan Chow is 10-4 playing mainly at number two singles. Other members of the Huskies who have won double digit matches are Jeff Nuhfer and Mitch Zenaty, both with marks of 11-9.
In doubles play, the team of Gal and Fernando Perez are 11-6 playing at number one, while Nuhfer and Zenaty are 7-1 playing at three doubles.
Bloomsburg, winners of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship, have won 13 of its last 14 matches. The Huskies are 0-1 all-time against VSU having lost 4-0 back in 1995 at the NCAA championships.
The Blazers are 14-5 on the year and won the Gulf South Championship. VSU, which won the 2006 national championship while finishing second in 2004 and 2007, is making its sixth championship event in the last eight years.
The winner of the match will face the winner of the Drury versus UC San Diego match in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
