Tennis Teams to Earn NCAA Championships Bids

BLOOMSBURG-- The Bloomsburg University men's and women's tennis have earned berths in the NCAA Division II championship tournament which begins on Thursday.

The Bloomsburg men's team will be the top seed and will host Merrimack College on Thursday at noon on the upper campus courts. In the other semi-final match, Adelphi will face Bryant University at 3 p.m. The winners will meet on Friday at 10 a.m. for the right to advance to the NCAA championship round in Houston, Texas next week.

The Bloomsburg women have also earned a spot in the NCAA regional tournament. The Huskies will host Queens College of New York on Thursday at 9 a.m. The winner of the match will then proceed to California (PA) to face the winner of the Cal versus St. Michael's of Vermont match on Friday at a time to be determined. The winner of the regional will move on to the NCAA championship round next week in Houston, Texas.

The Bloomsburg men's team comes into the tournament with a record of 14-5 on the year and won the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championship last weekend. The Huskies are on a roll having won 11 of its last 13 matches. Senior Dan Gal plays at the top of the lineup for the Huskies and has compiled a record of 16-3 in singles play and is a 12-6 playing at number one doubles.

The Bloomsburg women's team is 12-6 on the year and finished third at the PSAC championships last weekend. The Huskies started slow this season, but finished the year winning eight of their last nine matches. Leading the team in wins are Alison Carney, Tori Cunningham and Laura Sullivan with 10 victories each. Sullivan is 10-3, Cunningham 10-5 and Carney 10-7.
