Bloomsburg Indoor Track Teams Race At ESU

EAST STROUDSBURG —The Bloomsburg University indoor track team took part in the DeShriver Invitational at East Stroudsburg University on Sunday. In addition, junior Greg McGhee (Philadelphia/Cheltenham) took part in the prestigious New Balance Games at the Armory in New York.

At East Stroudsburg in women's action, Bloomsburg's women swept the first three places with Sarah Bounds (Shippensburg/Shippensburg) leading the way in a winning time of 10:51.65; Amber Hackenberg (Middleburg/Middleburg) was second at 10:52.59 followed closely by Karen Hause (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) with a 10:53.01.  All three times break the PSAC championships qualifying standard of 11:03.  Mary Bacher (New Tripoli/Central Catholic) was in fifth place out of the 17 competitors with an 11:16 performance.  For Bounds, Hackenberg and Hause it is their second qualifying event having previously exceeded the standard at the 5000 meter distance.

In the women's mile, Katie Conlon (Inkerman/Pittston Area) qualified for PSAC's posting 5:28.30, breaking the qualifying standard of 5:32.  Conlon was fourth in a field of 17 competitors. Conlon also took part in the 800-meter race and finished eighth out of 25 in 2:29.48 missing the qualifying time of 2:28.

Also in the 800-meters, Cherise Mercer (Philadelphia/Bishop McDevitt) bettered her qualifying time to 2:23.25, finishing third in the field of 25 competitors. 

In the long jump, Slippery Rock transfer Connie Ranieri jumped 17' 1 1/4" to place fifth out of 27 competitors in the women's long jump, exceeding the PSAC qualifying standard of 16'.

On the men's side, in the 3000-meters, Justin Shepherd (Cranberry Twp/Seneca Valley) and Bill Shephardson (McMurray/Peters Township) took positions five and six respectively in the 27-man field posting lifetime bests and PSAC qualifying results of 8:54.12 and 8:56.43.  Mike Espinosa (Media/Penncrest) finished eighth in the field at 9:02.69 having already qualified for this event last weekend. Freshman Dave Sanford (Nescopeck/Central Columbia) bettered his PSAC-qualifying mile time to 4:25.10, finishing an impressive 2nd in a field of 41 men. 

At 800-meters, Matt Corridoni (Pittston/Pittston Area) finished fourth in a field of 45 to qualify with his first sub-2:00 performance of 1:59.65.  The qualifying standard is 2:01.

At the New Balance Games in New York, McGhee ran a 7.23 in the 60-meters and 23.35 in the 200-meters.

For the season, the Huskies have now qualified 13 athletes in 20 different events for the upcoming PSAC championships.
