Bloomsburg has Solid Opening Day at PSAC Singles and Doubles Championships
BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University tennis teams hosted the first annual Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Singles and Doubles Championships which started on Friday. The Bloomsburg men have three singles players and one doubles team alive, while the women are finished in the tournament.
On the men's side, number one seeded Mike McGrath (Media/Penncrest) advanced to the semifinals with a convincing 6-0, 6-1 win over Slippery Rock's Ryan Steeth. He will be facing fellow Husky Aleks Kalezic (Belgrade/Yugoslavia) who won 6-1, 6-3 versus Millersville's Greg Bennett.
On the other side of the bracket Bloomsburg's Brendan Miller (New Providence/Lampeter-Strasburg), who defeated Slippery Rock's Rick Moore 6-2, 6-1, will face Kutztown's Mukundan Nandakumar, a 6-0, 6-1 winner in his quarterfinal match.
In the men's double bracket, Bloomsburg's duo of Brian Bogus (Conroe, TX/Oak Ridge) and Kurt Caster (Williamsport/Williamsport) were 8-1 winners over Millersville's Greg Bennett and Brandon Kessler. With the win, they advanced to the finals to face Kutztown's Alok Bhide and Nandakumar, 8-3 winners in the semifinals.
Slippery Rock has two semifinalists in the women's bracket. Top seeded Jessica Bungo was a 6-2, 6-0 winner in her quarterfinal match versus Indiana's (PA) Jackie Kulp. Bungo defeated Bloomsburg's Emily Murphy (Montgomery/Methacton) in the second round by a score of 6-4, 6-3. Bungo will face her doubles partner Ashley Michaux in one semifinal match. Michaux made quick work of Kutztown's Priya Pacakawde winning 6-0, 6-3.
On the other side of the bracket, Bloomsburg's Iida Hokkanen (Helsinki/Finland) lost a tough three set match to Kutztown's Kerstin Kloerffer, 3-6, 6-3, 10-8. Kloerffer will face Indiana's (PA) Yvonne Niederbracht in the semifinals. Niederbracht was a 6-2, 6-4 winner over California's (PA) Linda Escobedo.
One the doubles side, the pairing of Slippery Rock's Bungo and Michaux will face Millersville's team of Kate Opilo and Morgan Burdette. The Rock duo won their quarterfinal match over Clarion 8-2, while Millersville was 8-4 victors over Kutztown.
Shippensburg and Indiana (PA) will square off in the other semifinal match-up. The Lady Raiders duo of Lina Pavilionyte and Jennifer Longmire were 8-1 winners in their quarterfinal match over Bloomsburg's Lindsey Wyckoff (North Canton, OH/Hoover) and Julianne Bramante (Endicott, NY/Union Endicott). The Indiana (PA) team of Kulp and Niederbracht cruised over California's (PA) team of Olga Gonzalez and Escobedo, 8-1.
The action continues tomorrow with the men's double championship starting at 9:00 a.m.
