BLOOMSBURG—Bloomsburg University softball players Erica Miller (Williamsport/Williamsport) and Vanessa Sterner (Bloomsburg/Bloomsburg) have been named Louisville Slugger/NFCA (National Fastpitch Coaches Association) All-Americans for the 2000 season.
Miller, a junior shortstop, led the Huskies and the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) in hitting this season with a mark of .483 (a new Bloomsburg single-season record). She hit 17 homers and drove in 61 runs, both marks second best on the team, while scoring a team-high 64 runs. Miller also set Bloomsburg single season records in hits (102), extra-base hits (46), total bases (189), slugging percentage (.896) and fielding assists (152). She also set Bloomsburg career marks for home runs (39) and extra-base hits (99). During the season, Miller had a streak of consecutive hits snapped at 14, three shy of the Division II record. She also had 31 games with two or more hits and 17 games with two or more runs batted in.
This season Miller was also honored as the PSAC Eastern Division Player of the Year as well as first team All-PSAC-East for the second consecutive season. She was also named the winner of the Joanne McComb Outstanding Female Underclassman Award at Bloomsburg as well as the softball MVP. Miller was named the PSAC Eastern Division Player of the Week four times and the NFCA National Player of the Week once during the year.
At the NCAA championship tournament, Miller had one home run and drove in six for the Huskies who finished tied for third in the country.
Sterner, a junior outfielder, was named to the NFCA second-team. She hit .365 for the season with team-highs in homers (18) and RBI (68). Her home run and RBI totals are new single-season school and PSAC marks. Sterner was also tied for second in hits (76) and fourth in runs scored with 49. She made a game-saving catch in the NCAA championships against West Florida with a leaping grab of a long fly ball then crashing through the temporary fencing.
Sterner was also named a first-team All-PSAC selection for the second consecutive season and was PSAC East Player of the Week once. She also earned a spot on the NFCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region and the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional All-Tournament team.
Bloomsburg finished the year 49-12-1 winning the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional championship and finishing tied for third at the NCAA championships in Columbus, GA.
