Bloomsburg Baseball Players Named All-PSAC

BLOOMSBURG—Three Bloomsburg University baseball players, Jason Helcoski (Jessup/Valley View HS),Aaron Welles (Wyalusing/Wyalusing HS) and Shawn Betz (Boyertown/Boyertown HS) were named second team All-PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) for their play this season.

Helcoski, a sophomore first baseman, hit .357 for the Huskies this year with five homers and 32 RBI. Helcoski finished second on the team in hits (55), third in runs (32) and had a team-high in doubles (11). He also was 10 of 11 in stolen bases and had a fielding percentage of .989, committing just four errors in 356 chances.

Welles, a senior second baseman, hit .336 for Bloomsburg in 2000 with seven homers and 41 RBI, both team highs. Welles was tied for third in hits (50), and third in stolen bases (15). In a game with Lock Haven, Welles had a career day going three for four, all three hits being home runs, while driving in five runs. Welles was named the team MVP for the year 2000.

Betz, a senior third baseman, hit a team-high .390 with six homers and 25 RBI. Betz led the Huskies in hits (62) and runs scored (50) and was tied for second in stolen bases (18). In a game with Gwynedd-Mercy in early April Betz slammed three home runs and drove in four runs in a 17-6 win.

Betz was a pitcher his first three years with Bloomsburg and posted a career record of 11 wins and 10 losses. In 154 career innings for Bloomsburg, Betz struckout 98 and walked just 40.

The Huskies finished the year with a record of 19-31.
