Bloomsburg To Honor Charlie Chronister
BLOOMSBURG—Bloomsburg University will honor retired men's basketball coach Charlie Chronister with a retirement dinner on Saturday, December 7, 2002 in the Kehr Union Ballroom on campus. Chronister coached the Huskies for 31 years before announcing his retirement in July.
The festivities will follow Bloomsburg's basketball game against PSAC-rival Shippensburg University. Cocktails will begin at 6 p.m. in the lobby of the Ballroom, followed by a 7 p.m. buffet dinner. Tickets are $35 and are available by calling the Sports Information Department at (570) 389-4413 or by e-mailing Tom McGuire. All proceeds will benefit the Charlie Chronister scholarship fund.
Chronister posted a career record of 559-288, including a 250-128 mark against PSAC East teams during his tenure at Bloomsburg. He is one of just 25 Division II coaches to reach 500 wins and finished his career 13th all-time in Division II for career wins. Chronister averaged 18 wins during his coaching career at Bloomsburg and had nine seasons with 20 or more wins.
Chronister led the Huskies to seven NCAA championship tournaments, twice taking Bloomsburg to the quarterfinals. Bloomsburg won eight PSAC East championships and one overall PSAC championships with Chronister as head coach. His 1988-89 team set the school record wins with a mark of 27-5.
Chronister coached three All-Americans, John Willis, Jerry Radocha and Jon Bardsley, all of whom still hold numerous school records and 19 of the top 20 scorers in Bloomsburg history. The dinner will be a chance for former players, friends, family, fans and coaches to contribute to the scholarship fund and honor Chronister for his contribution to the University and its basketball program, the community and basketball in general.
