Women's Hoop Team Picked to Finish First in PSAC Pre-Season Poll: Men-Fourth
BLOOMSBURGThe Bloomsburg University women's basketball team is picked to finish first in the Eastern Division of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) during the upcoming 2002-03 season. The Bloomsburg men's team is picked to finish fourth in the Eastern Division in the preseason rankings. Voting was done by coaches in the PSAC Eastern Division.
The women's team, under coach Monica Starrett, returns just two starters, Jen Bryan and Michelle Albanese, to last year's squad which went 21-6.
Bryan, the 2001-02 PSAC Eastern Division Player of the Year and third team All-American, averaged 13.9 points and 9.0 rebounds a game last year for the Huskies. Seniors Meghan Roe and Karen Yeasted will join Bryan, a preseason All-PSAC East selection, in the frontcourt. Bryan needs just 164 points to reach 1,000 for her career.
Albanese, a sophomore, returns at point guard for the Huskies after starting the final 20 games of the year for the Huskies. As a freshman Albanese averaged 8.3 points and 2.1 assists per game and hit 39 three-pointers during the year. Looking to join Albanese in the backcourt will be junior Stef Kline, sophomore Meggie Rothermel and freshman Courtney Camacho.
The men's team will be under the guidance of Rich Mills this season who takes over for the retired Charlie Chronister. Mills inherits a team that went 14-14 a year ago, but reached the semi-finals of the PSAC tournament. Three starters return from last year's team led by preseason All-PSAC East selection Adam Bohman. A year ago Bohman averaged career-highs in points with 16.2 and rebounds with 7.5. He needs just 194 points to reach 1,000 for his career.
Along with Bohman, the other returning starters for the Huskies are Tom Barlow and Ryan Luckman. Barlow averaged 11.5 points and 6.5 rebounds, while Luckman averaged 7.4 points and led the PSAC in assists with 5.3 per game. Luckman also pulled down a career-high 6.8 rebounds per game last year.
Along with the three returning starters, look for increased production from junior Ryan Hewitt and sophomore Seth Scott.
The top newcomer to the team is Jason Benson, a transfer from Penn State-New Kensington, who scored 1,000 points in two seasons there. He is the brother of former Bloomsburg standout Jeff Benson.
