Huskies Win PSAC and ITA Tennis AwardsBLOOMSBURG—Several members of the Bloomsburg University men's and women's tennis teams were honored by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association with post-season awards.
Named the PSAC Athlete of the Year, first team All-PSAC and the ITA East Regions Women's Senior of the Year was Erin Bartsch (Warren/Warren), while Miranda Campbell (Cape May, NJ/Middle Township) was named second team All-PSAC. For the men, Aleks Kalezic, Mike McGrath (Media/Penncrest) and Kris Shumway (Towanda/Troy) were named first team All-PSAC, while Brian Bogus (Conroe, TX/Oak Ridge) was named second team All-PSAC and ITA East Player to Watch. In addition, Kurt Caster (Williamsport/Williamsport) and Mark Vellek (Sioux Falls, SD/Washington) were also named second team All-PSAC. Head coach Marty Coyne was named the ITA East Region Men's Coach of the Year. Bartsch, the team's 2002-03 team MVP, posted a mark of 24-3 on the year, including a 16-2 mark in dual meet action. In doubles play, Bartsch, named the PSAC Player of the Week earlier this season, has teamed with three different partners, earning a mark of 21-6, including a record of 21-3 with teammate Miranda Campbell. Bartsch finished her career with a mark of 83-15 in singles play and 75-28 as a doubles player. Bartsch, now a three-time PSAC Athlete of the Year in women's tennis, helped the Huskies to the third round of the NCAA Division II women's tennis championships. Campbell, a senior, posted a mark of 12-7 in singles play this season, most of it at number two singles. In doubles action, she was 21-3 at number one doubles with Erin Bartsch. This is the first All-PSAC honor for Campbell. Shumway earns his third straight first team All-PSAC selection after posting a mark of 7-12 for the year at number one singles. In doubles action, Shumway was 19-10 at number one doubles with three different partners during the season. For his career, Shumway posted a singles record of 60-37. Kalezic, a junior, earns his third straight first All-PSAC award after going 14-7, most of it at number three singles. In doubles play, Kalezic was 21-6 with three partners; most of at number two doubles. His best mark was 11-1 with Mike McGrath. The team's only loss was in the NCAA quarterfinals to West Florida. McGrath, a sophomore and team MVP in 2002-03, is a first team selection for the second straight year. He posted a mark of 13-8 in singles competition and was 25-4 in doubles play with four different partners, including the previously mentioned mark of 11-1 with Kalezic. Bogus, a sophomore, posted a singles mark of 23-5 in his first season with the Huskies to earn second team All-PSAC honors and the Player to Watch in the East award. In doubles play, Bogus was 23-9 with three different partners, including a mark of 8-5 at number one with teammate Kris Shumway. Earlier in the year it was Bogus' win at number four singles in a three-set thriller, which gave the Huskies the PSAC championship over Kutztown. Caster, a junior, is a repeat selection to the All-PSAC second team after posting a record of 16-5 during the season in singles play. In doubles, Caster was 24-6 for the Huskies with four different partners. Vellek, a sophomore, is a second team All-PSAC choice for the first time. This past season he posted a mark of 18-4 in singles, most of it at number four, while in doubles play he was 20-5, including a 12-2 record with Caster. Coyne, who completed his 10th season as head coach of the men's team, led the Huskies to a mark of 20-4 this season and the PSAC Championship, the 20th in school history. He also led the team to the NCAA Division II championships for the ninth consecutive year where it advanced to the quarterfinals for the third time under his direction. A four-time PSAC Men's Coach of the Year, Coyne was also named the ITA East Region Coach of the Year following the 1995-96 campaign and holds a career record of 146-55(.726). Before the PSAC changed championship formats, Coyne coached 36 PSAC singles champions and 16 doubles titlists. Coyne holds the distinction of being one of the few individuals to win a PSAC title as both a player and coach. |
