Huskies Travel to Hawaii for Spring Break
BLOOMSBURG— The Bloomsburg University men's and women's tennis teams will travel to Hawaii March 4-11 for their annual spring break trip. The women are 3-2 on the year and are ranked 19th in the nation by collegetennisonline.com, while the men are 1-2 on the season.
Bloomsburg is led by Iida Hokkanen (Helsinki, Finland) who is 4-6 on the season at number one singles. Torie Cunningham (Greenlawn, NY/Harborfields) is 9-5 on the year, while Lauren Colfer (Philadelphia/St. Basil's Academy) is 6-3 on the season. Emily Murphy (Montgomery/Methacton) and Lindsey Wyckoff (North Canton, OH/Hoover) both sit at 4-6 on the season, while Tracy Nissenbaum (Allentown/Sagemont, FL) is 3-3 in singles play. Emily Pratt (New Hope/New Hope-Solebury), 1-2 in singles, Kim Harvey (Jamesport, NY/Riverhead) and Jaclyn Kelly (Havertown/Haverford) will also see time for the Huskies.
For the men, the Huskies are led by Mark Vellek (Sioux Falls, SD/Washington) who has a singles record of 7-5, and Mark Farnsworth (Audubon/Methacton) who is 7-7 on the season. Mike McGrath (Media/Penncrest) will play at the number one slot for the Huskies after finishing last season with a record of 20-9. Brian Bogus (Conroe, TX/Oak Ridge) will also see time in the singles lineup, along with Dan Gal (South Park/South Park) and Kevin Wenck (Allentown/Parkland). Cory Smith (Doylestown/Central Bucks West), who has three wins on the year, will also see action for Bloomsburg along with Geoff Whitmey.
The women will play three matches on the trip against Chaminade University of Honolulu, BYU-Hawaii and Hawaii Hilo.
Chaminade is currently 0-2 on the season with both losses coming from Pacific West-rival, BYU-Hawaii.
BYU-Hawaii is currently ranked first in the nation by collegetennisonline.com and has won three consecutive NCAA Division II national championships. Jing Jing Liu and Adrienn Hegedus, at first and second singles for the Seasiders are ranked first and second in the nation, while third-singles player, Gurianna Korinihona is ranked 23rd. The team has won a NCAA Division II-record 107 straight dual matches.
Hawaii Hilo is 0-2 on the season and is ranked 12th in the nation. Both of Hilo's losses come from BYU-Hawaii in Pacific West Conference action. Mai Fujii, at number one singles for Hilo, is ranked 41st in the nation.
The Huskies will play four matches in men's action against Chaminade University of Honolulu, BYU-Hawaii, Hawaii Hilo and a Division I opponent in the University of Hawaii-Manoa.
Chaminade is 0-2 on the season with two losses to BYU-Hawaii in Pacific West Conference action. BYU-Hawaii is 6-1 on the season and currently ranked 9th in the nation. The Seasiders are led by Dorian Porada and Dillon Porter who are ranked 22nd and 38th in the nation, respectively. BYU-Hawaii won back-to-back national titles in 2002 and 2003.
Hawaii Hilo is ranked 27th in the nation and is 3-4 on the season and 0-2 in the Pacific West Conference. In their last two matches, the Vulcans got wins over Colorado School of Mines and Sonoma State University, dropping only three matches as a team.
The University of Hawaii is 3-5 on the season after beating BYU-Hawaii 5-2 in their last match, handing the Seasiders their first loss of the season. The team is led by Dalibor Ptak at first singles who is 8-11 on the year and Ryan Sceats at third singles who was recently named the Western Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week and is 9-5 on the season.
In the past three seasons, the men have compiled a 12-4 record on spring break trips, while the women are 9-4 in the past three years on the team's trips to Hilton Head, SC.
The Huskies will kick off spring break action on March 7 against Chaminade at 2:00 p.m. Hawaii time. The match will be held at the University of Hawaii-Manoa.
