Huskies Shutout at NCAA Championships

Box Score and Play by Play

SALEM, VA—Natalie Hill doubled home two runs and Kym Kling pitched a three-hit shutout to lead St. Mary's of Texas to a 2-0 win over Bloomsburg University at the NCAA Division II national softball championships.

With the loss the Huskies, now 43-7, will face Barry University of Florida in an elimination game Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.

St. Mary's broke out on top in the game in the bottom of the third inning when leadoff hitter Tanya Medina dropped a two-out single into short center field. Shortstop Natalie Hill then doubled to right center field sending Medina around to score. Hill was then gunned down trying to stretch the hit into a triple.

The Rattler's added an insurance run in the sixth when Hill doubled home Monica Fuentes who was pinch-running for Ashley Boedecker who led off the inning with a single.

The Huskies offense was stymied by the pitching of the Lady Rattlers' Kling. After Ali Necci reached on a double in the second inning, Kling retired the next 16 batters into the seventh inning before Lisa Mull beat out an infield single with two outs in the top of the seventh inning. Kling finished with seven K's on the night.

Bloomsburg did have two scoring opportunities in the first two innings. Jess Shnyder led off the game with a double off the fence in left center, but Kling retired the next three batters for St. Mary's.

Then after Necci doubled with one out in the second inning, Kling again worked out of the jam getting the next two batters.

Amber Cowher had her streak of scoreless innings snapped at 26 1/3 with the run by St. Mary's in the third inning. Cowher had not allowed a run to that point in either the NCAA regionals or the championship round.
