Bloomsburg Wins 14th PSAC Softball Championship

CALIFORNIA, PA —Jess Shnyder (Milton/Milton) homered and drove in three runs to lead Bloomsburg University to a 5-3 win over California (PA) giving the Huskies their 14th Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference softball title in the last 20 years. The win came in the final game of the tournament as the Huskies lost 9-1 in the first championship game of the day.

Shnyder was named the tournament's MVP after going 9-13 and hitting three home runs in four games.

The Huskies, now 38-6, will now more than likely host the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional championships next Thursday-Sunday, May 9-12.

In game one of the day the Huskies had a chance to capture the title a victory. But, the Vulcans, who disposed of Lock Haven in the day's first game, beat the Huskies, 9-1 in five innings. It was a five-run fifth inning, which did in Bloomsburg. Amber Riegel and Julie Wallace had the big blows in the inning for Cal. Riegel doubled in two runs, while Wallace hit a two-run homer for the Vulcans.

With the win California forced a showdown in game seven of the tournament, with the winning team claiming the PSAC title.

In the final game, Shnyder got the Huskies going with a home run leading off the game. For Shynder it was her 10th home run of the season and the second time in the tournament she has led off the game with a home run. Amanda Breon(Bellefonte/Bellefonte) then singled and scored on a two-out double by Lisa Mull (Port Carbob/Pottsville).

Cal cut the deficit in half when Kimmie Miller hit a solo homer off Amber Cowher (Williamsport/Williamsport) in the bottom of the first.

The Huskies pushed the lead to 5-1 in the second by scoring three times. With two on and one out, Shnyder doubled home both runs making it 4-1. Shnyder came in with the fifth run for Bloomsburg on an error by the second baseman later in the inning.

The Vulcans made it 5-3 in the fifth getting two-run homer from Abby McMinn. But, Cowher, who shutout California on Friday afternoon, allowed just one hit and three base runners over the final two innings to give Bloomsburg the win.

Shnyder finished game two 2-4 with a homer and three RBI, while Mull was 1-3 with an RBI for the Huskies. Abby McMinn was 2-3 with a run scored and two RBI for the Vulcans.
