PSAC Softball Championships Underway

BLOOMSBURG—Shippensburg University advanced to the championship game of the 2003 PSAC softball championships by winning both of its games on Friday. The Lady Raiders are now just one win from their first-ever PSAC title.

In game one, Indiana (PA) beat Bloomsburg, 2-1, just the second win in school history for IUP over Bloomsburg in 42 games. The Huskies took the early lead in the game when Amanda Breon homered in the top of the first inning.

The Indians had a threat in the bottom of the third with runners at second and third and one out, but Bloomsburg pitcher got back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.

The Huskies led 1-0 going into the bottom of the sixth when IUP pitcher Jodie Swavely hit a home run to tie the game at 1-1. In the bottom of the seventh, Julia Mayer led off with a single and was sacrificed to second. After a pop out, Swavely walked putting runners at first and second when Erica Templin singled through the right side scoring Mayer with the winning run.

In game two of the tournament, Shippensburg beat California (PA), 12-0, in five innings. The Lady Raiders scored five times in the second and seven times in the third to get the easy win. Four players drove in all of the runs for Shippensburg with Liz Corr, Jamie Dacey, Sarah Costa and Jessica Miller all getting three RBI in the game. Pitcher Kelley Tiesi limited the Vulcans to just three hits in the game.

In the first elimination game of the tournament, Bloomsburg beat California, 9-1, in five innings. The Huskies scored twice in the first inning and seven more times in the third for the win. Becca Kehler and Kelly Zarski each had two-run triples in the inning for Bloomsburg. Jaime Wilson allowed just two hits in getting the win.

In a winner's bracket game, Shippensburg beat IUP, 11-3, in six innings. Sarah Costa drove in three runs for the Lady Raiders who were aided by five IUP errors. Amanda George also drove in two runs for the winners.

Shippensburg will face the winner of the next elimination game between IUP and Bloomsburg at 1 p.m. The Indians and Huskies will play each other in the day's first game at 11 a.m. at Jan Hutchinson Field.
