Bloomsburg Softball Team at NCAA Regionals; All-PSAC Selections AnnouncedBLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University softball team will take part in the NCAA Division II Mid-Atlantic Regional championships Thursday through Saturday at Shippensburg University. The Huskies, 35-10, the number two seed, face the winner of the California (PA)-Shaw University (NC) game at 4 p.m. on Thursday. A win, puts the Huskies into a 2 p.m. winner's bracket game on Friday, while an opening round loss puts the Huskies into a 10 a.m. game on Friday. The other games on Thursday have Indiana (PA) and Kutztown playing at 10 a.m. with the winner facing Shippensburg at 2 p.m. Bloomsburg is making its 21st consecutive NCAA playoff appearance this season and will be looking for its fourth straight NCAA regional title. The winner of the Mid-Atlantic regional title advances to Salem, Oregon for the NCAA national championship tournament. The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) also announced the All-PSAC softball teams for 2003 and the Huskies are well represented. In addition, several of the players were also named the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Mid-Atlantic Region team. Amanda Breon (Bellefonte/Bellefonte), a sophomore, was named first team All-PSAC shortstop and is hitting .279 this season with four homers and 24 RBI. She leads the team in triples with seven, is second in runs scored with 26 and is third doubles with seven. Breon has a slugging percentage of .503, good for third on the team. Jess Shnyder (Milton/Milton), a junior, was named first team All-PSAC and first team All-Region in the outfield after leading the Huskies in several offensive categories this season. She is first in batting average with a mark of .354, first in runs scored with 31, hits with 57, doubles with 12, homers with seven and in RBI with 28. She also has a team-high slugging percentage of .634 and is second in triples with six. Shnyder is a three-time All-PSAC first team selection and was first team All-American a year ago. Amber Cowher (Williamsport/Williamsport), a junior, was named first team All-PSAC pitcher and first team All-Region. So far this season Cowher is 18-6 with a 1.20 ERA. She has thrown 12 shutouts among her 17 complete games and had a career-high 175 strikeouts, while giving up just 39 walks. Cowher, a three-time PSAC East Pitcher of the Week this year, held opponents to a .161 batting average for the season. Cowher now has two first-team All-PSAC and one, second-team All-PSAC selections in her career. She is also a two-time, first team All-Region selection. Dee Wolfe (Milton/Milton), a sophomore, was named first team All-PSAC and second team All-Region as a utility player. This season she has seen time at third, first and designated hitter and is batting .342. She has two homers and 21 RBI and is third in doubles with eight. These are the first career honors for Wolfe. Jaime Wilson (Olyphant/Bishop O'Hara), a sophomore pitcher, was named second team All-PSAC and second team All-Region. In 14 games Wilson posted a record of 9-3 with a 0.73 ERA. She had four shutouts and one save during the season. She also struck out 57 and walked just eight in 77 innings of work. Opponents hit just .160 off her during this year. Wilson was named the PSAC Pitcher of the Week once this year after going 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA the week of April 19th. These are the first career post-season honors for Wilson. Liza Pepper (Cumbola/Pottsville), a senior, was named second team All-PSAC this season at first base. For the year, Pepper is hitting .271 with 10 RBI. She is second in doubles with 11 and is third in walks with 11. Pepper has previously earned two first team All-PSAC selections and one, second-team All-PSAC selection in her career. She also earned first team All-Region honors in 2002 and is a two-time member of the All-Tournament team at the NCAA national championships. |
