Bloomsburg Splits Pair with Kutztown in Softball

KUTZTOWN —Deanna Wolfe's RBI single scored Samantha Basalik with the go-ahead run in the 12th inning lifting the Bloomsburg University softball to a 5-3 win over Kutztown and a split of its doubleheader Sunday afternoon. The Golden Bears won the opener, 9-3.

In the game two the Huskies trailed 2-0 heading into the top of the third inning when they scored once. Laurel Koster walked with two outs and came in to score on a triple by Amanda Breon to make it a 2-1 game. The Golden Bears scored once in their half of the third inning to make it 3-1 before the Huskies tied the score at 3-3 in the top half of the fifth.

In the fifth, Kelly Zarski singled to open the inning and came home on a two-run homer by Wolfe who was pinch-hitting for Koster.

The Huskies had a chance to take the lead in the top of the sixth getting three hits in the inning but leaving two runners on base. Kutztown had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh putting runners at second and third with no out. Pitcher Jamie Wilson, however, struck out the side to end the threat and send the game into extra innings.

In the 12th inning, with one out, Basalik tripled and came home on a single by Wolfe to give the Huskies a 4-3 lead. After Breon walked, Jess Shnyder doubled home Wolfe to make it 5-3.

Kutztown did get the tying run to home plate in the home half of the 12th, but Wilson got Erin Livingston to fly out to right to end the game.

In the opener, the Huskies allowed seven runs to Kutztown in the bottom of the fourth inning and never recovered. Bloomsburg's three runs came in the fifth inning when Wolfe tripled home Becca Keher and Basalik. Wolfe later scored on an error by the Kutztown third baseman.

Bloomsburg 18-6, 5-1 in the PSAC East, will visit Millersville on Tuesday at 3 p.m. for a doubleheader.
