Bloomsburg Splits With Shippensburg in Softball

BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University softball team split a pair of games with Shippensburg on Sunday afternoon. The Huskies won the opener 1-0 in eight innings and lost the nightcap, 3-2, in 10 innings.

In the opener, the Huskies and Lady Raiders were locked in a scoreless pitchers-dual all afternoon. The Huskies' Amber Cowher and Kelly Tiesi traded shutout innings till the eighth when the Huskies pushed across the game-winning run.

The inning started with Becca Kelher going down swinging. Samantha Basalik and Kelly Zarski then singled putting runners at first and second. After Crystal Condron went down swinging for out number two, Amanda Breon popped one up to shortstop Kristen Marll just off the infield dirt. However, Marll dropped the ball allowing Basalik to score the game's only run.

Cowher earned the win allowing just four hits and no runs, while striking out eight. Tiesi also allowed just four hits in the loss and struckout eight.

In game two, the Lady Raiders got on the board first in the fifth inning when Brenna Eck reached on an error. After moving to second on a sacrifice, Fawn Gaidos singled her home for a 1-0 lead.

The Huskies tied the score in the home half of the sixth when Jess Shnyder connected on her third home run of the season.

Bloomsburg had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh, but left Sara Roba, who had singled, stranded at second base.

After a scoreless eighth and ninth innings, the teams went to the tie-breaker rule, placing the runner who made the final out of the last inning at second to start the 10th inning.

With Kristen Marll running at second to start play for Shippensburg, the Lady Raiders quickly put two runners on base when Mary McKee reached on an error. Eck then followed with an RBI single to left scoring Marll. McKee came home on an error by Basalik making it a 3-1 game.

In the Huskies half of the 10th, Basalik started at second and moved to third on a sacrifice by Sarah McDaniel. After Ambder Cowher struckout pinch-hitting, Jess Shnyder lined a single to right scoring Basalik to make it a 3-2 game with two outs. However, Breon then flied out to deep right field ending the game and giving Shippensburg a split.

Bloomsburg goes to 21-7, 8-2 in the PSAC East, while Shippensburg is now 22-8, 9-3 in the PSAC East. The Huskies visit Millersville Tuesday at 3 p.m.
