Bloomsburg Beats ESU in Sofball; Game Two Called by Darkness

EAST STROUDSBURG—The Bloomsburg University softball team won game one of its doubleheader with East Stroudsburg on Wednesday by a score of 6-1. Game two was called after seven innings due to darkness with the score tied 2-2.

In the opener, the Huskies put three runs on the board in the top of the third inning. Laurel Koster (Whitney Point, NY/Cicero North Syracuse) tripled to start the frame and came home on a triple by Jess Shnyder (Milton/Milton). Samantha Basalik (Warminster/Wm. Tennent) then singled home Shnyder with the game's second run. After a double by Dee Wolfe (Milton/Milton) put runners at second and third, Basalik scored on a sacrifice fly by Sara Roba (Emmaus/Emmaus).

The Huskies added single runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings to back the two-hit pitching of Amber Cowher (Williamsport/Williamsport). The senior hurler struckout nine and walked just two to earn her eighth win of the season.

In game two, the Huskies and Warriors were locked in a scoreless heading into the top half of the fourth inning. With one out, Dee Wolfe homered to left to give Bloomsburg a 1-0 lead. The Huskies made it 2-0 in the fifth when Koster tripled to and scored on a single by Kristen Kovaleski (Mechanicsburg/Mechanicsburg).

East Stroudsburg tied the score in bottom of the seventh. Jennifer Veronesi singled to start the inning with Crissy Wontroba slamming a two-run homer to tie the score. The Warriors then followed with a single and a double, putting runners at second and third with no outs. Bloomsburg then brought in Cowher to pitch. Cowher induced a force out at home, got a fly out to center and a strikeout to end the threat.

There is no word on when or where the tie game will be resumed.
