Bloomsburg Splits with Kutztown in Softball

Box Score-GAME ONE

Box Score-GAME TWO

KUTZTOWN —The Bloomsburg University softball team split a doubleheader on Wednesday with Kutztown winning the opener 4-3 and losing the nightcap by a 4-2 count.

The second game ended on a controversial play. In the bottom of the seventh inning with the score tied 2-2, the Huskies' Amber Cowher (Williamsport/Williamsport) came into pitch and retired the first two batters of the inning. After walking the next hitter, Karli Hauseman hit a homer run to left field that was originally called a foul ball by the home plate umpire. Immediately, though, he reversed his decision and called the ball fair for a game-winning two-run homer.

Kutztown took a 2-0 lead in game two in the bottom of the second inning. The Huskies, though got one back in the top of the third inning on an RBI single by Dee Wolfe (Milton/Milton), which scored Jess Shnyder (Milton/Milton). Bloomsburg tied the score in the fifth inning when Cowher singled home Kelly Zarski (Danville/Danville) after Zarski had reached on a two-out walked and moved to second on a single by Sara Roba (Emmaus/Emmaus).

In game one, Bloomsburg got all its runs in the second inning. Amanda Breon (Bellefonte/Bellefonte) doubled to start the inning, then after a pop out, Cowher was hit-by-a-pitch and Roba singled to load the bases. After the Golden Bears got the second out of the inning, Jess Shnyder doubled to clear the bases and give Bloomsburg a 4-0 lead.

Kutztown got three runs back in the bottom of the fifth, but Cowher was able to get out of a bases loaded jam to preserve the lead.

Cowher earned the win with seven strikeouts and two walks.

Bloomsburg, 18-8-1, 5-3-1 in the PSAC East, will host West Chester on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
