Huskies Split in Softball with Kutztown

BLOOMSBURG—Pitcher Amanda Smith (Sandy Ridge/Philipsburg-Osceola) tossed a four-hit shutout to lead Bloomsburg University to a 6-0 win and a split of its doubleheader with Kutztown on Saturday. The Golden Bears won the first game by a 3-2 score.

The Huskies took control of game two in the first inning when Jess Shnyder (Milton/Milton) singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Shnyder then scored on a single by Dee Wolfe (Milton/Milton). Sara Roba (Emmaus/Emmaus) then followed with a double scoring Wolfe for a 2-0 lead.

Bloomsburg stretched the lead to 4-0 in the second when Alyson Taylor (Jersey Shore/Jersey Shore) had a an RBI double and Shynder a sacrifice fly. The Huskies made it 6-0 in third on RBI hits by Amber Cowher (Williamsport/Williamsport) and Kelly Zarski (Danville/Danville).

Kutztown did load the bases in the sixth inning with one out, but Smith was able to get two pop outs to end the inning.

Smith finished with four strikeouts, while walking three to earn her eighth win of the year.

In the opener the Golden Bears took a 1-0 lead when Adriane Willmer walked to start the game and was sacrificed to second. Karli Hausman then singled with Willmer moving to third. When Hausman stole second and the throw got past second base, Willmer was able to come in and score the first run of the game.

Bloomsburg rallied and took a 2-1 lead in the third. With one out, Laurel Koster (Whitney Point, NY/Cicero North Syracuse) reached on an error and moved to second on a ground out. Samantha Basalik (Warminster/William Tennent) then singled to score Koster with the tying run. Basalik then stole second and came home on a single by Dee Wolfe to give the Huskies the lead.

Kutztown tied the score in the fourth when Megan Achey scored after starting the inning with a single. The Golden Bears then scored what proved to be the game-winning run in the fifth when pinch runner Megan Bainbridge, running for Erin Livingston who had walked, scored on a double by Dani Spalik.

The Huskies put the tying and go-ahead runs on base in the bottom of the seventh with two outs, but Kutztown pitcher Stacey Denlinger got a flyout to end the game.

Bloomsburg goes to 24-11-1, 11-6-1 in the PSAC East, while Kutztown goes to 22-14, 12-8 in the PSAC East. The Huskies visit Shippensburg on Tuesday for a doubleheader at 3 p.m.
