Bloomsburg Splits On Day One of NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Softball
BLOOMSBURG —Amanda Smith (Sandy Ridge/Philipsburg-Osceola) tossed a 15-inning shutout to lead Bloomsburg University to a 1-0 win over Lock Haven in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Mid-Atlantic Regional championships Thursday at Shippensburg University. In game two, the host Lady Raiders shutout the Huskies 5-0.
In the opener Smith, a junior, and Lock Haven's Shona Guevara were matching zeroes on the scoreboard and strikeouts in the scorebook. Smith struckout a career-high 17, while Guevara notched 16 strikeouts of her own.
The Huskies finally broke through in the top of the 15th inning when Laurel Koster (Whitney Point, NY/Cicero North Syracuse) singled to right field and moved to second on a bunt. After moving to third on a passed ball, Samantha Basalik (Warminster/William Tennent) reached base on an error allowing Koster to score the game's only run. Smith then retired the Lady Eagles to end the near four-hour marathon.
Smith, who got her sixth shutout of the year, extended her scoreless streak to 18 innings with the win. The run scored by the Huskies also snapped an 18-inning scoring drought for the Bloomsburg offense. Basalik, Koster and Kelly Zarski (Danville/Danville) each had two hits for the Huskies.
In game two, Shippensburg's Anna Corr had two hits and drove in three runs to lead the Lady Raiders to the win. Kelly Tiesi allowed just two hits on the day and had 10 strikeouts.
Shippensburg scored two times in the fifth to break open the scoreless game, then put the game away with three runs in the sixth.
Bloomsburg goes to 26-15-1 with the split and will face the loser of the California (PA)-Kutztown game at noon on Friday in an elimination game.
