Bloomsburg Softball Ends Season At NCAA Regionals

SHIPPENSBURG —The Bloomsburg University softball team saw its season come to an end with a 1-0, eight-inning loss to Kutztown at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Softball Championships on Saturday at Shippensburg University. Earlier in the day Bloomsburg had stayed alive in the tournament with a 5-0 shutout of Lock Haven.

In the game one of the day, the completion of a suspended game from Friday, the Huskies got another shutout effort from pitcher Amanda Smith, who allowed just five hits in beating the Lady Eagles for the second time in three days. In a 15-inning marathon on Thursday, Smith shutout Lock Haven and ended her season by not allowing a run over her final 25 innings of work.

The Bloomsburg offense was keyed by two hits each from Samantha Basalik, Sara Roba and Kelly Zarski. Roba had three RBI on the day, a run scoring single in the second and two-run single in the third. Dee Wolfe also had an RBI for the Huskies, while Zarski slammed a solo homer for Bloomsburg's other run.

The win by Smith was her 11th of the season against just two losses.

In the elimination game, the Huskies managed six hits, but left eight runners on base. The Huskies best scoring chance came in the sixth inning when Bloomsburg loaded the bases with two outs, but Kutztown got a ground out to end the threat. Bloomsburg also had two runners on base with one out in the eighth, by Kutztown escaped the jam a flyout.

Kutztown scored the game-winning run in the last of the eighth when Kate Hausman tripled with one out, then scored on a single by Sara Bricker ending Bloomsburg's season.

The Huskies end their season with a mark of 28-16-1.
