Huskies Drop Pair to Shippensburg in Softball

BLOOMSBURG— The Bloomsburg University Huskies fell to Shippensburg University in a softball doubleheader on Saturday, 1-0; 6-2.

In the first game, Sarah Costa's fourth inning solo homerun proved to be the difference as Shippensburg defeated Bloomsburg 1-0. Shippensburg pitcher Kelley Tiesi piched seven innings, giving up only one hit, while not allowing a run and striking out nine.

Bloomsburg's Amber Cowher (Williamsport/Williamsport) pitched seven strong innings, allowing one run on three hits, while striking out nine. Dee Wolfe's (Milton/Milton Area) fourth inning single broke up Tiesi's perfect game.

In game two of the doubleheader, the Lady Raiders jumped to an early lead on a double by Jamie Dacey, knocking in Liz Corr who singled in her at bat. Bloomsburg took the lead in the bottom half of the inning when Jess Shnyder (Milton/Milton) and Samantha Basalik (Warminster/William Tennent) each reached on an error. Dee Wolfe advanced the runners on a ground out and Amanda Breon (Bellefonte/Bellefonte) knocked them in with a two-run single.

Shippensburg tied the game in the second inning when Anna Corr scored on a passed ball. The Lady Raiders took the lead in the fourth when Kristen Marll started the inning off with a single and Jessica Miller advanced Marll on a sacrifice bunt. Marll then scored on an error.

Shippensburg took the lead for good in the fifth inning when Jamie Dacey and Sarah Costa started the inning off with a pair of walks and Anna Corr sealed the victory with a three-run home run.

Dee Wolfe, Amanda Breon, and Kelly Zarski (Danville/Danville) each had hits on the day for the Huskies. Breon drove in both Bloomsburg runs, while Shnyder and Basalik scored runs for the Huskies.

Bloomsburg returns to action on Tuesday at Mansfield at 3:00 p.m.
