Bloomsburg Drops Pair in Softball

SHIPPENSBURG —The Bloomsburg University softball team dropped a pair of games to Shippensburg on Tuesday losing 2-1 in eight innings and 6-5 in the nigthcap.

In the opener, the Huskies trailed 1-0 going into the top of the sixth when Jess Shnyder (Milton/Milton) hit a two-out homer to tie the game. It was the 10th homer of the season for the senior All-American.

Shippensburg won the game in the eighth inning when with one out, Liz Corr tripled and Jamie Dacey hit a sacrifice fly to score Corr with the gamewinning run.

In the nightcap, the Huskies jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning. The two-out rally started with a singles by Sara Roba (Emmaus/Emmaus) and Kelly Zarski (Danville/Danville). Amber Cowher (Williamsport/Williamsport) then reached on an error to load the bases. Alyson Taylor (Jersey Shore/Jersey Shore) also reached on an error by the shortstop with Roba and Zarski scoring on the play. Samantha Basalik (Warminster/Wm. Tennent) then singled to score Cowher to give Bloomsburg the early lead.

Bloomsburg extended the lead to 5-0 in the fourth. Shnyder walked to start the inning with Amanda Breon Bellefonte/Bellefonte) reaching on an error. Dee Wolfe (Milton/Milton) then singled with Shynder getting tagged out at home on the play. Roba then reached on an error with Breon and Wolfe both scoring.

Shippensburg got one run back in the fifth inning, then posted five runs in the sixth to take the lead. Anna Corr had the big hit in the inning, a two-run single, while the go-ahead run came when Jessica Miller walked with the bases loaded to force in a run.

Bloomsburg did mount a rally in the seventh inning and had runners at second and third with one out, but the Lady Raiders were able to get a pop up and a strike out to end the game.

The Huskies go to 24-13-1, 11-8-1 in the PSAC East. Shippensburg improves to 38-3, 19-1 in the PSAC East, and clinched first place in the division with the victories. Bloomsburg will host Mansfield on Friday at 2:30 p.m. in the final regular season home games of the year.
