Softball Picks Up a Pair of Wins over University of the Sciences

BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University softball team swept University of the Sciences on Sunday, 16-0 and 6-1.

In the first game, Amanda Smith (Sandy Ridge/Philipsburg-Osceola) pitched a one hitter and only allowed four University of the Sciences' batters to reach base safely.

Offensively, the Huskies exploded for eight first inning runs on four hits and three University of the Sciences' errors. The Huskies had already scored four runs when Jess Shnyder (Milton/Milton), hitting for her second time in the inning, laced a bases clearing triple to push the advantage to 7-0. Shnyder later scored in the inning as Dee Wolfe (Milton/Milton) reached on an error, driving in Shnyder. The Huskies added two runs in the second as Amanda Breon (Bellefonte/Bellefonte) started things off with a triple. Kelly Zarski (Danville/Danville) knocked Breon in with a single and later scored on a fielder's choice.

Bloomsburg added five more runs in the fifth inning as Wolfe singled in Shnyder and Samantha Basalik (Warminster/William Tennent). A few batters later, Laurel Koster (Whitney Point, NY/Cicero North Syracuse) doubled in two runs to push the score to 15-0. Bloomsburg added one more in the fourth to win 16-0 in a game shortened by the mercy rule.

Smith retired the first 11 batters she faced in order, and finished with seven strikeouts while only allowing two walks.

Jess Shnyder led Bloomsburg on offense, with three hits and four runs scored while driving in three of her own. Dee Wolfe finished the game with two hits and four runs batted in while both Kelly Zarski and Laurel Koster drove in two runs apiece.

In the second game, Bloomsburg trailed after University of the Sciences' Megan Trimble hit a solo homerun with two outs in the first inning. After failing to score in the first two innings, Bloomsburg got on the scoreboard as Jess Shnyder hit a triple, driving in Kristen Koveleski (Mechanicsburg/Mechanicsburg). After Samantha Basalik singled in Shnyder, Sara Roba (Emmaus/Emmaus) hit a sacrifice fly to leftfield driving in Basalik, making the score 3-1. The Huskies added their final three runs in the fourth inning as Dee Wolfe hit a bases clearing triple making the score 6-1. Neither team threatened to score in the final three innings as Bloomsburg picked up their eighth consecutive victory.

Jen Probst (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) picked up her second win of the year on the mound for the Huskies, scattering four hits while striking out 10,

Offensively, Samantha Basalik, Jess Shnyder, and Dee Wolfe each had two hits for the Huskies. Wolfe drove in three runs in the game while Basalik, Shnyder, and Sara Roba drove in a run apiece.

The Huskies return to action on Wednesday as they travel to East Stroudsburg to face the Warriors in a doubleheader starting at 2:30.
