Softball Sweeps Doubleheader from East Stroudsburg

BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University softball team swept a doubleheader from East Stroudsburg on Sunday afternoon. The Huskies won game one 5-3 and were 2-1 winners in eight innings in game two.

In game one, Bloomsburg scored four times in the fifth inning to pick up the 5-3 win. Trailing 2-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, Jill Homyak (Lehighton/Marian Catholic) started the Bloomsburg rally after reaching on an error. After Amanda Breon (Bellefonte/Bellefonte) flew out to centerfield, Kelly Zarski (Danville/Danville) was able to reach base on another Warrior error. Dee Wolfe (Milton/Milton Area) then singled to load the bases before Sara Roba (Emmaus/Emmaus) knocked in two runs on a double. Tiff Corliss (Lewisburg/Lewisburg) then knocked in Dee Wolfe with a single to give the Huskies the 4-3 lead. Sarah McDaniel (Dallastown/Dallastown) managed to hit a deep sacrifice fly ball to right field to score Roba from third.

Amanda Smith (Sandy Ridge/Philipsburg-Osceola) only allowed a single the final two innings to pick up her 10th win of the season.

In the second game, Tina Jennosa (Downingtown/Hauppauge) drove in Jess Snader (Mount Joy/Donegal) in the bottom of the eighth inning to propel Bloomsburg to the 2-1 victory.

After East Stroudsburg scored the first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning, the Huskies responded as Laurel Koster (Whitney Point, NY/Cicero North Syracuse) scored on a Jen Probst (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) pinch-hit single in the bottom of the fourth.

The teams remained tied until the bottom of the eighth inning when the Huskies were able to break through. After Sara Roba grounded out to start the inning, Tiff Corliss smashed a single to leftfield to put the Huskies in business. Laurel Koster followed with a single and Bloomsburg had runners on first and second with one out. Jess Snader came into run for Corliss, and pinch-hitter Tina Jennosa responded with a single up the middle, scoring Snader.

Sheelin Fisher (Coplay/Allentown Central Catholic) allowed only four hits and struck out eight to pick up her fourth win of the season.

With the win, Bloomsburg improves to 29-5, 10-4 PSAC East while East Stroudsburg drops to 16-15-1, 6-7-1 PSAC East. The Huskies return to action on Wednesday as they host West Chester at 2:30 p.m.
