Bloomsburg Sweeps Mountaineers in Softball

BLOOMSBURG—Kelly Zarski (Danville/Danville) went 3-5 with two homers for the day as Bloomsburg University swept Mansfield University by scores of 10-0 and 4-1 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Softball action.

Zarski was 2-3 in the opener with a two-run homer, then went 1-2 with a solo homer in game two as the Huskies improved to 27-5 overall, 8-4 in the PSAC East.

In game one, the Huskies scored twice in the first on a two-run double off the bat of Dee Wolfe (Milton/Milton) to stake Bloomsburg to a 2-0 lead. Zarski's home run in the second inning made it 4-0 in favor of the Huskies before Bloomsburg put the game away with six in the third. The big hits in the inning were a two-run triple from Laurel Koster (Whitney Point, NY/Cicerco North Syracuse) and a two-run double from Wolfe.

Amanda Smith (Sandy Ridge/Philipsburg-Osceola) earned the win tossing a two-hitter and fanning eight for Bloomsburg.

In the nightcap, Zarski hit a solo homer in the bottom of the third inning to give Bloomsburg a 1-0 lead. The Mountaineers tied the score in the top of the seventh inning on a solo homer from Sytiva Seeitz.

Bloomsburg, though, got the go-ahead runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Koster had an RBI single in the inning scoring Sarah McDaniel (Dallastown/Dallastown), while Jill Homyak (Lehighton/Marian Catholic) scored Alyson Taylor (Jersey Shore/Jersey Shore) with an RBI single. Koster scored the third run of the inning on a wild-pickoff play.

Jaime Wilson (Olyphant/Bishop O'Hara) went the distance and struckout seven and did not walk a batter.

Mansfield falls top 18-7-1 with the losses, 5-6-1 in the PSAC East.

Bloomsburg will host East Stroudsburg on Sunday at 1 p.m. in a makeup doubleheader.
