Huskies Sweep Season-Opening Pair

MOUNT OLIVE,NC-The Bloomsburg University softball team opened its 2010 season with a sweep of Mount Olive College on Saturday. The Huskies won by scores of 3-0 and 5-3.

In the opener Shavaun Fisher (Coplay/Allentown Central Catholic) tossed a one-hit shutout to lead the Huskies to the win. Fisher allowed just a one-out single in the fifth, while striking out 11 and walking just one.

Bloomsburg got its offense by scoring single runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings. In the second Mandy Leach (Milford/Delaware Valley) drew a bases loaded walk to score the first run, while in the fourth Leach drove in the second run with a fielder's choice. In the fifth inning Nikki Shiko (Shamokin/Southern Columbia) was hit by a pitch, stole second, went to third on a wild-pitch and scored on a single by Lori Neyhard (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia).

In game two, Shen DeBaro (Milton/Milton) went 2-3 and drove in a run and pitcher Cait Paine (Lebanon/Lebanon) won in her first career start to lead the Huskies to a 5-3 win. Paine went six and a third innings and struck out three to earn the win with Fisher closing out the game to earn the save.

With the Huskies leading 4-3 heading into the seventh, Bloomsburg got an insurance run when Neyhard singled and later scored on an error. Mount Olive (2-12) put two runners on in the bottom of the seventh, but could not score. Shiko made a diving stop on a ground ball and tagged the bag to end the game.

Bloomsburg (2-0) will play at Chowan (NC) on Sunday at noon.
