Bloomsburg Wins Atlantic Region Final With 5-3 Win over West Virginia Wesleyan

BLOOMSBURG-- The Bloomsburg University men's tennis beat West Virginia Wesleyan 5-3 in the championship of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region championship and will advance to the NCAA championship round next week in Orlando, FL.

The was the second meeting in three weeks before the two teams with West Virginia Wesleyan winning 5-4 in the first matchup. This match was also a classic.

Bloomsburg took a 2-1 lead coming out of doubles getting wins at number one from Fernando Perez (Center Valley/Southern Lehigh) and Ryan Glubo (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) by an 8-4 score. At three doubles Seth Rybak (Huntingtown, MD/Huntingtown) and Alan Hummel (Manheim/Hempfield) won 8-2 for the Huskies, while the Bobcats earned a win at two doubles from Daniel Lobo and Rafael Cavalcante by an 8-2 score.

In singles play, Bloomsburg got wins from Perez at number one who pulled out a three-set thriller, 3-6, 6-1, 6-0, and at number two from Lee Wexler (Lafayette Hill/Plymouth-Whitemarsh) who won by scores of 6-3, 6-3 to make it 4-1 in favor of the Huskies.

West Virginia Wesleyan cut the margin to 4-3 with a win at three from Danilo Franciscon, 6-4, 6-4, and Doug Hornak at number five who was a 6-4, 6-4 winner.

With the match on the line the Huskies got the gamewinner from Jason Nolt (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) at number six who rallied from a set down to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 setting off a celebration for the Huskies. The lone match not to finish was at four singles where Bloomsburg's Glubo was up a set 7-6 (11-9), but trailing in the second 5-4 to Lobo from West Virginia Wesleyan.

Bloomsburg goes top 12-7 with the victory, while West Virginia Wesleyan falls to 18-5. The Huskies will be making their second consecutive and ninth trip overall to the NCAA championship round under coach Marty Coyne.
