Men's and Women's Tennis Teams Head to NCAA Round of 16

BLOOMSBURG-- The Bloomsburg University men's and women's tennis are in Orlando, FL for the NCAA Division II national championship round and will open play with quarterfinal matches on Wednesday. The men's team will face Concordia (NY) at 8 a.m., while the women will take on Lynn University at 1:30 p.m.

Bloomsburg's men's team is 12-7 on the season and advanced to the round of 16 with a pair of wins in the Atlantic Regional. The Huskies beat West Liberty 5-1 in an opening round match, then, downed West Virginia Wesleyan 5-3 in the championship match.

Leading the Huskies this season is Fernando Perez (Center Valley/Southern Lehigh) who is 19-6 on the year playing at number one. Perez has won five straight and eight of his last 10 matches for the Huskies. Along with Perez, Mark Schroeder (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) at number three is 12-10, while Ryan Glubo (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) at number four is 10-8.

In doubles play the number one team of Perez and Glubo are 11-2 on the season winning six straight and eight of their last 10.

Concordia (NY) is 19-3 on the year and won a pair of East Regional matches by scores of 5-0 last weekend to advance to Orlando. The Clippers and Huskies have already played once this season with Concordia winning 9-0.

The women's team is 15-5 on the season and advanced to the championship round with wins over Virginia State, 5-0, and Slippery Rock, 5-3, in the regional finals. The match with the Rock was a classic three and-a-half hour marathon that saw three singles matches go three sets.

Leading the Huskies in wins this season is Laura Sullivan (Dingman's Ferry/Delaware Valley) at number four singles. Sullivan is 17-3 on the year and has won 11 straight and 13 of her last 14 matches. At number one singles is Katie Hasyn (Lansdale/North Penn) who is 11-8, while Emily Palko (McMurray/Peters Township) is 11-6 at number two with Alison Carney (Muncy/Warrior Run) is 12-6 at number three. Carney won the deciding match with Slippery Rock in a three-set thriller.

In doubles play, Carney and Palko are 11-9 playing at number one, while the team of Sullivan and Andrea Malatesta (Berwick/Berwick) are 15-4 on the year, 9-1 in their last 10 matches.

Lynn, ranked second in Division II, is 25-0 on the year and has shutout its last nine opponents. Alisson Siaci leads the Knights with a 19-0 record playing at number five, while Magdalena Ekert is 19-1 at number two.
