Fernando Perez Wins PSAC Tennis Title

BLOOMSBURG- Bloomsburg University men's tennis player Fernando Perez captured the men's singles title at the 2008 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Individual tennis championships on Sunday.

Perez, a sophomore, beat Andy Torrealba of Kutztown in straight sets in the finals, 6-4, 6-2. Perez got to the finals with a win over Arpit Sharma of Kutztown in the semi-finals. Perez opened the tournament on Saturday with wins over Donald Swantko of Millersville, 6-2, 6-2; and Ryan Glubo, his teammate at Bloomsburg, 6-1, 6-3.

Glubo had reached the quarterfinals with a win over Will Norris of East Stroudsburg. The other Bloomsburg entrant in singles play was Jeff Nuhfer, who beat Booby Zerwick of Kutztown in round one, then lost to Torreabla in the quarterfinals.

In doubles play, Bloomsburg's team of Alan Hummel and Mark Schroeder beat Slocum and Sorgi from Millersville in round one by a 9-8, three in the tie-breaker; but lost to Labitsch and Sharma of Kutztown in the semi-finals, 8-1.

On the women's side in doubles, Bloomsburg's team of Carney and Palko won an opening round match over the team from Millersville, 8-0, but lost to Kutztown in the quarterfinals, 8-3. In singles play, Bloomsburg did not have anyone advance past the opening round.
