Starrett Named PSAC East Coach of the Year; LaBuda Player of the Year

BLOOMSBURG— Bloomsburg University women's basketball coach Monica Starrett has been named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Coach of the Year for the 2000-01 season in voting by the coaches of the conference.

Megan LaBuda (Hazleton/Hazleton) was also named the PSAC Eastern Division Player of the Year and first team All-PSAC, while Jen Bryan (Denver/Cocalico)and Carrie Pugh (Pottsville/Pottsville) were named All-PSAC second team.

Monica Starrett Starrett, in her fourth season with the Huskies, guided the team to a 22-6 record and a berth in the PSAC semifinals, losing to California (PA), 81-72. Bloomsburg also earned its second bid in four years under Starrett to the NCAA championships.

The Huskies won the PSAC East championship with an 11-1 record, the third Eastern Division title in four years under Starrett, while her 22 wins are tied for third-most in a single season at Bloomsburg. In four years, Starrett is second all-time in victories at Bloomsburg with a mark of 82-30.

Bloomsburg finished the 2000-01 season fourth in the PSAC in scoring at 73.3 points per game and fourth in scoring defense at 61.4 points per game. The Huskies were third in scoring margin at +11.8, fourth in rebounding with 43.0 per game and second in rebounding margin with a mark of + 7.9. Five times during the season the Huskies grabbed 50 or more rebounds in a game.

Megan LaBuda LaBuda, a junior from Hazleton, leads the conference in scoring with 15.8 points per game; ranks fourth in rebounding at 8.7 a game and is fourth in free throw percentage at 82.1 percent (96-117). She garnered East Player of the Week accolades three times, all coming in the last five weeks of the regular season. She tied for fifth in the league with 10 double-doubles and scored 20 or more points on eight occasions. Her best week came in the final week of the regular season when she tied her career-high with 26 points against Millersville, then followed that up with a 27-point effort in a win over West Chester for the PSAC East championship. For her career, LaBuda is 14th in scoing at Bloomsburg with 933 points.






Jen Bryan Bryan, a sophomore, was named second team All-PSAC for the first time in her career. Bryan was second on the Huskies in scoring with 10.1 points per game and in rebounding with 6.5 a game. During the season Bryan scored a career-high 16 points in a win over Mansfield and tied her career-high in rebounds with 14 against Millersville.




Carrie Pugh Pugh, a junior, earns second team All-PSAC honors for the first time in her career. Pugh was third on the team in scoring with 8.5 points per game. A versatile player, Pugh also averaged 3.8 rebounds a game, 2.2 assists and 2.1 steals, while shooting 41.6 percent from the floor. She also finished third on the team with 10, three-pointers. Pugh's best scoring game of the year was 15 points and came in a key road win at Millersville, 82-76 in overtime.
