Bloomsburg Falls to Kutztown in Women's Basketball

KUTZTOWN —Karen Yeasted scored 21 points and had 10 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team lost to Kutztown University, 75-68, Saturday afternoon. The Huskies played without leading scorer Jen Bryan (Denver/Cocalico), who missed the game due to a foot injury.

The Golden Bears (13-12, 6-4 PSAC East) jumped out to the early lead, 11-8, in the first five minutes of the game on the strength of two three pointers by Jessica Pieczynski. The Huskies (14-10, 6-5 PSAC) got to within one point on two occasions of the opening half, the fist with 13:48 to play on a layup by Karen Yeasted (West Lawn/Holy Name) and the second time at the break, 30-29, after Jamie Kauczka (Kingston/Wyoming Valley West) scored on a layup.

In the second half, the Huskies tied the game at 36-all on a three-pointer by Michelle Albanese (Wilmington, DE/St. Mark's) with 16:17 left in the game. The Huskies later took the first lead of the game since early in the game when Meaghean Roe (Brownstown/Conestoga) scored inside to make it a 47-36 game with 11:10 to play. That would prove to be the final of the day for the Huskies. The Golden Bears went on a 7-0 to take a 53-47 with 7:56 to play in the game. Bloomsburg rallied on two layups by Yeasted and a free throw by Albanese to get within one, 53-52, with 6:16 to play. Another 7-0 run by the Golden Bears pushed their lead to eight,60-52, with 5:03 left in the game.

Down the stretch the Huskies put the Golden Bears on the foul line trying to get back into the game, but Kutztown hit nine of 10 free throws in the final two and half minutes to win by seven, 75-68.

Along with Yeasted's 21 points, Albanese added 20 points, including five three-pointers with Meggie Rothermel (Minersville/Nativity BVM) chipping in with 11 points. Off the bench, Kauczka added nine points and 11 rebounds.

Pieczynski scored 25 points to Kutztown with Amanda Zinobile getting 13, Danielle Warntz 11 and Carolyn Franchetti 10.

The Huskies conclude the regular season Wednesday at Cheyney starting at 6 p.m.
